Coursed or random

Two ways to build the same stone

Stone is sorted before it is laid. Coursed work is squared and run in level beds; random rubble is laid as it comes, with every stone chosen for the gap it fills. They are different jobs and they look nothing alike finished.

CoursedSquared and run in level beds. Reads as deliberate, and takes longer because every stone is worked.
Random rubbleLaid as it comes, each stone picked for the gap it fills. Looks older, and is how most field and garden walls round here were built.

Asked often

Stonework, answered

If yours is not here, ring and ask it.

Lime or cement mortar?

Lime on anything old or soft. Lime moves and lets the wall breathe, so the stone takes the weather instead of the mortar. Cement on a modern wall is fine; cement against soft stone takes the faces off it.

Can you match the stone on my wall?

Usually. Local walling stone around Bristol is mostly Pennant and lias, and reclaimed is often the better match for a repair. A photograph tells you most of it.

My wall has bulged — can it be repaired?

Often. A bulge is usually the wall separating into two skins with loose fill between. It is taken down to sound work and rebuilt, keeping the stone, with through-stones to tie it.

Do stone walls need foundations?

Yes, and more than people expect — stone is heavy. A dry-stone field wall is different, but anything mortared sits on concrete.
